What makes a long weekend
A długi weekend (long weekend) happens when a public holiday falls on or adjacent to a Saturday–Sunday, creating a 3-day or longer break. Poles often take annual leave (urlop) on the bridging day to extend it further.
Major long weekends in 2026
Easter (3–6 April 2026)
- Good Friday (3 Apr): not a work-free day, but many take leave.
- Easter Sunday (5 Apr): work-free.
- Easter Monday (6 Apr): work-free (Śmigus-Dyngus).
- Creates a 4-day weekend if you take Friday off.
May long weekend (1–3 May 2026)
- Labour Day (1 May): work-free.
- Flag Day (2 May): not work-free, but widely observed.
- Constitution Day (3 May): work-free.
- 2 May falls on a Saturday in 2026, so the whole 1–3 May is a 3-day weekend. Many Poles take the preceding Thursday off for a 5-day break.
Corpus Christi (4 June 2026)
- Always a Thursday (60 days after Easter).
- Creates a 4-day weekend if you take Friday off.
- Street processions in many cities.
Assumption + Polish Army Day (15 Aug 2026)
- Assumption of Mary (15 Aug): work-free.
- Falls on a Saturday in 2026 — effectively a normal weekend unless the day off transfers to Monday (it does not in Poland).
All Saints (1 Nov 2026)
- Falls on a Sunday — combined with the weekend.
- Cemeteries are very busy; transport to cemetery districts is congested.
Christmas (25–26 Dec 2026)
- Both days work-free.
- 24 Dec (Wigilia) is not work-free but most employers let staff leave early.
What closes
On work-free days:
- Supermarkets, malls, and large shops — closed by law.
- Small neighbourhood shops (małe sklepiki) — may open.
- Pharmacies — at least one duty pharmacy per district.
- Public transport — runs on Sunday/holiday schedule (reduced frequency).
- Banks and government offices — closed.
- Restaurants and cafés — mostly open, but check ahead.
Transport tips
- PKP Intercity (intercity.pl): book 1–2 weeks ahead for May and Christmas weekends. Trains sell out.
- FlixBus / PKS: extra services on popular routes (Warsaw–mountains, Warsaw–sea) but still busy.
- City transport: Sunday/holiday schedule. Reduced night buses in some cities.
Planning advice
- Book early — hotels and trains fill up weeks ahead for May and Easter.
- Check shop closures — stock up on groceries the day before.
- Expect traffic — Friday afternoon before a long weekend is one of the worst traffic days of the year on Polish highways.
- Emergency numbers (112) work 24/7, but non-emergency municipal services operate on skeleton staff.
