- Building (ubezpieczenie murów) — structure, walls, fixed installations; for owners.
- Contents (ubezpieczenie ruchomości) — your furniture, electronics, clothes; for tenants and owners.
What it usually covers
- Fire, flood, storm, theft, vandalism.
- Burst pipes and water damage (a very common claim in blocks).
- Short-circuit damage to electronics.
- Third-party liability (OC w życiu prywatnym) — if you flood a neighbour.
Cost
- Contents + liability: ~150–400 PLN/year for a flat.
- Building: ~0.1–0.2% of rebuild value per year.
Tips
- Read exclusions (e.g., unheated pipes in winter).
- Photograph valuables and keep receipts.
- Pay annually for a discount.
FAQ
- Is home insurance mandatory?
- Not by law, but mortgage lenders require building insurance, and many housing cooperatives (wspólnoty) require third-party liability for owners.
- Does it cover my belongings as a tenant?
- A contents policy (ubezpieczenie ruchomości domowych) covers your belongings. The landlord's policy covers the building and their fittings.
