What is Andrzejki?
Andrzejki is the eve of Saint Andrew's Day, 29 November. Traditionally a night of fortune-telling, especially about love and marriage. It is mostly a party for teenagers and students today.
Classic games
- Pouring wax through a keyhole into cold water; the shadow of the hardened shape is read as a clue about your future.
- Shoe race: line up shoes from the wall to the door; whose shoe reaches the door first will marry first.
- Names in cards: draw slips with names to predict a future spouse.
At work
Some offices run a light-hearted Andrzejki party. If invited, join in — it is a friendly, low-pressure social event.
Where it comes from
The tradition predates Christianity, rooted in winter solstice divination, and was later attached to Saint Andrew's feast.
