Electricity
- Choose a supplier (dostawca prądu) — e.g., Tauron, PGE, Enea, plus smaller resellers.
- Sign a contract; send a meter reading.
- Bills come monthly or bimonthly; pay by bank transfer or direct debit.
Gas
- PGNiG is the main supplier; the market is opening to competitors.
- Not every home uses gas; many flats are electric-only.
Water and sewage
- Provided by the local municipal water company (e.g., MPWiK in Warsaw).
- Billed by meter, usually every few months.
Heating
- Central heating (ciepło systemowe) from a city plant (e.g., Veolia, PEC) — billed via the housing cooperative.
- Individual gas/electric heating is common in newer builds.
Rubbish
- Municipal waste fee (opłata śmieciowa) is set by the commune and billed per household.
- Sorting (plastic, paper, glass, bio, mixed) is mandatory; fines apply for not sorting.
Tips
- Set up direct debit to avoid late fees.
- Keep bills for tax deductions if self-employed.
FAQ
- Can I choose my electricity provider?
- Yes. The market is liberalised; you can switch suppliers. Many compare offers on rankomierczaki.pl.
- Is heating usually separate?
- In apartment blocks heating is often central and billed via the housing cooperative (wspólnota). In newer flats it may be individual.
